Not all cocktails can boast a history like that of the Negroni, which was first created in Florence in the 1920s.
Count Camillo Negroni, a devoted customer of the Caffè Casoni, one day asked his trusted barman, Fosco Scarselli, to add Gin, a reminder of his mother’s English origins, to his usual Milano-Torino. So the cocktail became known as an “American in the style of Count Negroni” and later simply as “Negroni”.
Thanks to these noble origins, the cocktail gained great popularity in Florence in the 1930s and 40s and, later, acclaim throughout Italy and the rest of the world. (More information about the Negroni can found in the book by bartender Luca Picchi, Negroni Cocktail Una leggenda Italiana.)
One of the officialcocktailsof theInternational Bartenders Association, today the grandeur of its originslives on in the hands of those who relish the taste and delight in the intense colour of the Negroni.
